About Us
OUR MISSION

Our mission is to advocate for and empower justice involved veterans and their families by providing second chance opportunities, reentry support, and connections to essential services. We exist as a safe, inclusive American Legion community where all veterans are seen, valued, and supported, fostering responsibility, transformation, and restored dignity while strengthening our veteran family and the communities we serve.
The American Legion has officially chartered Phoenix Rising Post 822 at SCI Phoenix, establishing a vital cornerstone for rehabilitative efforts and bridging the gap between incarceration and successful reentry for justice-impacted veterans. This new post will provide incarcerated veterans with a structured environment fostering leadership, accountability, and community service, aiming to significantly reduce recidivism and promote successful reintegration into society.
The primary focus of Post 822 will be addressing critical justice-impacted veteran issues, including ensuring access to VA benefits, providing mental health support for PTSD, and facilitating vital peer-to-peer mentorship. The American Legion recognizes that the bond of military service e is a powerful tool for transformation, and this initiative underscores the commitment that no veteran is left behind, regardless of their circumstances.
“The chartering of Post 822 represents our commitment to the principle that no veteran is forgotten,” said newly elected Post 822 Commander Wilmer Omar Vega Colon. “By empowering these men to continue their service behind the wire, we are helping them rebuild their lives and prepare for a productive future as citizens.”
Post 822 will operate under the standard bylaws of the American Legion, conducting regular meetings and engaging in service projects that benefit both the inmate population and outside veteran charities. This rehabilitative model leverages the military values of duty and honor to assist veterans in navigating the complexities of the justice system while maintaining their dignity and connection to the veteran community. The establishment of this post is expected to foster a sense of purpose and belonging, crucial elements for successful rehabilitation.
